Following Your Heart

Acting on inner wisdom amidst the symphony of everyday moments

The past week dissolved like morning mist—a blur of conference calls, business trips, strategy sessions, and hurried workouts. Now, Friday evening finds me in rare solitude at Liberty State Park.
To finally pen this article, I've claimed a bench beneath the farthest tree, seeking distance from the crowd. Before me stretches the stunning Manhattan skyline, gleaming in gentle sunlight. Perfect conditions for contemplation, I thought.
Yet life has other plans.
A helicopter cuts across the sky. A cyclist speeds past. Within minutes, my sanctuary becomes a stage for humanity's beautiful interruptions: a Mexican gentleman asks me to photograph him, a Telugu family strikes up conversation, playful dogs demand attention. All wonderful distractions that compete with my purpose of writing this article.
Following your heart is remarkably similar—there are plentiful distractions, some joyous and some mellow. But distractions are distractions. Focus amidst chaos requires training.

The Ancient Wisdom of Stillness

We've all heard the analogies be like the lotus in muddy water, remain in the eye of the storm where stillness exists, stay anchored like a ship in turbulent seas. These images point to a profound truth inner stability is possible even when outer conditions are chaotic.
If only following your heart were easy!
While it seems challenging to those of us driven by logic, social conformity, and sensual distractions, following our heart is actually the most natural thing we can do. As children, we did it instinctively in play, in spontaneous hugs, in moments of wonder. We discovered and relied on intuition when knowledge wasn't available.
However, to make this natural again, we must decondition ourselves and navigate through certain hurdles: the demands of logic, the pull of our senses, endless desires, and the pressure of social conformity.

The Cost of Following Everything Else, Other Than the Heart

Consider what happens when we follow other ideologies:

  1. Chasing endless desires: Whether they take the form of dharma, artha, kama, or even moksha—desires have no natural endpoint.

  2. Following only your mind: Analysis paralysis strikes when incomplete information meets endless overthinking.

  3. Following only your senses: Dopamine overload takes 15 minutes; detox requires three days.

  4. Following society's script: You end up living someone else's template of success or worse failure, not your own authentic path.

Simply bringing awareness to what drives our behaviors and actions can help us course-correct, if not prevent these patterns entirely. Life is a school, and sometimes we face tests. However, the rewards after passing these tests are phenomenal.

The Profound Simplicity

Here lies the profound insight: Following your heart becomes your default when you stop following everything else. As my Teacher, Daaji, beautifully puts it, the ideal situation is an "eclipse of the heart and mind" where logic serves wisdom rather than overwhelming it. Logic remains essential, but it works in harmony with heart intelligence rather than in opposition to it.

The Courage Connection

Following your heart also requires courage. In fact, the word "courage" itself comes from the French coeur-age—literally meaning "heart-age" or acting from the heart. This etymology reveals an ancient understanding: true bravery isn't the absence of fear, but the willingness to act from our deepest knowing despite external pressures.

Finding Your Anchor

In my own continuing journey through various storms difficult decisions, deadlines, life events, etc., I've discovered that Heartfulness meditation has become my anchor. When external chaos threatens to pull me off course, this practice creates that essential space of inner stillness. It's in this quietude that my heart's wisdom becomes audible above the noise.
The practice is beautifully simple: sitting quietly, turning attention gently toward the heart, and allowing whatever is there to be felt. No forcing, no analyzing—just receiving. In these moments, the artificial separation between heart and mind dissolves, and clarity emerges naturally.
In our hyper-connected world, developing the capacity to hear your heart becomes both more challenging and more essential than ever. The noise is louder, the distractions more sophisticated, yet the need for authentic guidance grows stronger.

Your Unique Navigation System

Your journey and fulfillment are uniquely yours. But the navigational system you choose—mind alone, senses alone, society's script, or integrated heart wisdom—determines not just where you arrive, but who you become along the way.
The invitation is always present: to pause, listen, receive, and trust the quiet wisdom that speaks from within, even as the world spins loudly around us.
Like that lotus in muddy water, we can remain pure and centered. Like that anchored ship, we can stay stable while storms rage. The capacity for this inner stillness exists within each of us—it simply awaits our attention and cultivation.
The heart knows the way. We need only create the space to listen.
